3. Use online banking for activity on your debit and credit cards. Temporarily lock your debit and credit cards.
4. Other ways to place check orders include using www.ordermychecks.com, mailing us the re-order slip, or ordering in online banking.
Q: Why is the branch closing?
A: Mike Doran, GenFed’s CEO said, “This decision wasn't made lightly. We looked at usage trends, member behavior, staffing needs and future opportunities. Traffic patterns are showing a shift toward digital, the Great Oaks Branch is fully capable of absorbing the volume while delivering excellent service, and we can reinvest the savings into long-term growth. We’d like to better serve membership, employees, and the credit union as a whole by allocating these resources differently and strengthening overall service. The same access is available with a very nearby traditional branch, and those in-person options will continue to be supplemented with our digital channels and ATM network with over 170,000 ATMs where you can conduct many of the same transactions as you would in a branch 24 hours a day.”
Q: Are you just cutting costs?
A: No, this allows us to use our resources wisely to reinvest in what matters most to members. We can’t offer the lowest loan rates, higher savings rates, best technology, and maintain two offices within two miles of each other when so much is moving to digital. We’d rather deliver a GREAT experience at one location than offer a good experience at two, especially as on-site visits continue to decline.
Q: I don't use online banking, what about me?
A: You’re still fully supported in person at the Great Oaks Branch and via the S. Lyman St. ATM, which will be upgraded to a deposit taking ATM soon!
Q: Is GenFed in trouble?
A: No. We’re financially strong—this is a strategic move forward, one that we didn’t take lightly.
Q: I don't want to drive across town.
A: We hear you – it’s a change and a short drive, but Wadsworth Great Oaks Trail branch is less than 2 miles away and staffed with the same friendly faces you know and trust. For the service and support you can count on, we hope you’ll agree – it’s a short drive that’s well worth it!
Q: Will more branches close?
A: There are no additional closures planned at this time. We continually evaluate the need for each branch based on market conditions, potential, and trends.
Q: Are you laying off employees?
A: No. The Wadsworth team was not downsized with the branch closure. Just as they have been during the temporary closure, GenFed S. Lyman St. branch employees are at our Wadsworth Great Oaks location, ready and willing to serve you.
Q: Why weren't we told sooner?
A: This wasn't an easy or original part of our strategic plan for 2025. We delayed communication because we were still genuinely debating the closure. The temporary closure gave us time to fully weigh the impact and guage the member response. Ultimately, a unique set of circumstances - including staffing, usage trends, and shifting needs - led us to move forward earlier than we expected. We wanted to make sure that when we communicated it, we had a solid plan, and the ability to fully support both our members and our team.
