GenFed Financial Credit Union, Inc., commonly known as GenFed, is a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union serving eligible members in communities across Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana.

What is GenFed?


GenFed Financial Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial institution owned by its members. Unlike a bank owned by outside shareholders, GenFed exists to serve its member-owners.

GenFed first opened for business in 1938 as the credit union for employees of the General Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. Over time, GenFed expanded into additional communities and now serves eligible members in parts of Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana.

What Is American Share Insurance?
American Share Insurance, also known as ASI, is a private share insurance provider for credit unions. GenFed uses ASI as part of its account insurance structure.

What Is Excess Share Insurance?
Excess Share Insurance, also known as ESI, provides additional private insurance coverage for eligible GenFed accounts beyond the ASI coverage amount described in GenFed’s disclosure.

Is GenFed Federally Insured by the NCUA?
No. GenFed Financial Credit Union is not federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA.

Who Is Eligible to Join GenFed?


GenFed membership is open to people who meet GenFed’s eligibility requirements. Eligibility can be based on where a person lives, works, attends school, volunteers, or worships; family relationship to an existing member; or connection to a select employee group traditionally served by GenFed.

Family and Employer Eligibility
Immediate family includes a spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, and step or adopted relationships to any of these. A person may also be eligible if they live in the same residence as a member and maintain a single economic unit with them. This includes domestic partners, roommates, family members, and legal guardian relationships. It does not include people staying temporarily in a residence, or members of fraternities, sororities, condominium complexes, or boarding houses.

GenFed membership is good for life, even if you or your family members relocate out of our membership area.

How Can Members Access GenFed Accounts and Services?


GenFed members can access accounts and services through branches, online banking, mobile banking, ATMs, shared branching, phone or text support, and other account-service tools.

Digital Access and Member Services
GenFed offers online and mobile banking tools for account access, transfers, mobile deposit, alerts, bill pay, card controls, and other account-management functions. GenFed also offers Zelle for person-to-person payments, along with mobile wallet options, remote deposit, wire transfers, DocuSign, and online and mobile safety guidance.

ATM and Shared-Branch Access
GenFed provides branch access and ATM access through its own locations and through the shared-branch network, which allows members to complete transactions at participating credit union branches across the United States.

GenFed members have access to 170,000 surcharge-free ATMs and the CO-OP Shared Branch network, with more than 5,500 shared branch locations.

When Was GenFed Founded?


GenFed first opened for business in 1937 as the credit union for employees of the General Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.

GenFed’s history includes expansion into additional communities and a 1982 merger with Mt. Vernon General Tire Employees Credit Union. GenFed continues to operate as a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union.
